Fast retrieve with lifted tip of the rod will create surface skipping action imitating fleeing fish.
Subsurface walk the dog can be achieved with lowered rod tip and slow retrieve as soon as lure hits the water.
Twitching of the rod with slow or medium retrieve will create erratic swimming action.
